A Unique Way to See Coastal Virginia

Williamsburg is known for its deep roots in American history, but beyond the landmarks and battlefields lies a different kind of history—the rich maritime traditions of the Chesapeake Bay. With Captain Hogg’s Charter Service, you can step into that story and experience Virginia from a whole new perspective.

Set out on a private fishing charter just 40 minutes from Williamsburg and discover the natural beauty of the Bay. Glide past marshes, spot ospreys diving for fish, and breathe in the salty air as you head to prime fishing spots only locals know. It’s not just about catching fish—it’s about soaking up a side of Virginia that most tourists miss.

Easy Day Trip Access

You don’t have to carve out an entire weekend to enjoy this kind of adventure. Captain Hogg’s Charter Service departs from Hampton, making it a quick and easy half-day or full-day trip from Williamsburg. Morning and afternoon charters are available, so you can fish early and still have time to explore Williamsburg in the afternoon—or flip it and wind down your day on the water.

Need directions? Just give the captain a call at 757-876-1590, and we’ll help you plan the perfect outing.

Fun for the Whole Family

Fishing is one of the best ways to unplug and reconnect with your family while doing something hands-on together. Our charters are family-friendly, and we love introducing kids to the joy of fishing. From showing them how to bait a hook to helping them reel in their first catch, we make it educational, interactive, and just plain fun.

Parents often tell us that the fishing trip ends up being the highlight of the entire vacation—not just for the kids, but for them, too. Whether you’re traveling with little ones, teens, grandparents, or a mix of all ages, we tailor the trip to fit your group and your goals.

Never fished before? No problem. We’ll walk you through every step.

What You Might Catch (and When)

Depending on the season, you could reel in a variety of local favorites, including:

  • Croaker
  • Spot
  • Bluefish
  • Flounder
  • Spanish Mackerel
  • Striped Bass (Rockfish)
  • Cobia
  • Speckled Trout

Spring and early summer offer lighter crowds and a good mix of species, while late summer and fall bring in bigger game and cooler temps. No matter when you visit, we bring all the bait, tackle, rods, and gear—you just bring your sense of adventure (and maybe a cooler for your catch).

Want to know what’s biting before you book? Give us a call for recent fishing reports and photos from the boat.

Learn While You Fish

A fishing trip isn’t just about the catch—it’s also an opportunity to learn something new. Our captain and crew are happy to teach you about the local ecosystem, fishing techniques, and the history of the Bay. We answer questions, share stories, and make sure every guest leaves with a little more knowledge than they came with.

Many families tell us that their kids end up sharing everything they learned from the trip for days afterward. It’s an awesome way to sneak in some learning without them even realizing it.

Combine with Local Attractions

After your fishing trip, make the most of your Williamsburg vacation by exploring all the area has to offer. Here’s how to fit it all in:

Morning Charter + Afternoon Adventures

  • Start your day fishing from 7 AM to noon.
  • Head back to Williamsburg and grab lunch in Merchants Square.
  • Spend the afternoon touring Colonial Williamsburg or taking a ride at Busch Gardens.

Afternoon Charter + Historic Morning

  • Tour the Jamestown Settlement or Yorktown Battlefield in the morning.
  • Fish from 1 PM to 6 PM and catch the golden hour on the water.

With flexible start times and half-day or full-day options, you can build your itinerary around what matters most to you.

What to Bring

We keep it simple, but here are a few things we recommend:

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Hat or visor
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Snacks or a packed lunch (for longer trips)
  • Camera or phone for pictures
  • Cooler for your catch (if you plan to take fish home)

Don’t worry if you forget something—just let us know and we’ll do our best to help.

Captain Hogg treated us to a very great outing. He and his first mate led us to catch more fish than anticipated. He was very flexible with our timing fluctuations. His boat provided plenty of indoor seating and plenty of shade. I would highly recommend him to friends and family.

My family and myself had a blast on this trip. Captain Chandler took us straight to the bay and knew exactly where the fish were. My boys were so excited to catch monster fish and the mate JJ was amazing helping them. He knew exactly what to do and how to reel the fish in. We will definitely be back next year for another trip with them!

We had an absolute blast with Captain Hogg and First Mate JJ aboard the Smokin’ Gun II, catching fish after fish in the Chesapeake Bay! The captain and his mate were super friendly, and very knowledgeable about the area and the fishing. We started the day trolling for Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel and we caught a ton of them! We then set out for my target fish, a monster Red Drum. It didn’t take long before I hooked the fish of my dreams! JJ was super helpful with the fight and after about 15 minutes, we got the beast in the boat! We had a fantastic time, and we will definitely be back next year!

Had a great time on a half day charter! Captain and first mate were very welcoming and knowledgeable. We ended up catching bluefish, spade and Spanish mackerel. The first mate was amazing at his job and did his best to keep my 5 yr old involved (it was very hot that day and my kiddo was over everything about an hour in). The first mate even set up a rod for my son so he could catch other species in order to get his junior angler award (which he got!)! Would definitely recommend a trip with Captain Hogg's if you're in the area!!

This was an absolutely amazing experience for 3 very unseasoned, 1 semi seasoned & 1 very seasoned fishermen! We left right at 6:30am for the 1/2 day trip into the Bay. 1st Mate Brett gave us the scoop on the boat (and where the bathroom was) and we headed out of the Harbor and into the Bay! The boat was comfortable with shaded areas inside and they had everything we needed to start catching fish. You could do as little or as much as you wanted to and don’t have to have any fishing experience to have a blast! The best part was when there were fish on all 5 lines at once and Brett & his sidekick Harper went to work coaching us on how to reel them in, netting them and then unhooking them! I never touched bait or a hook! I did kiss a fish though! Then on the ride back in, Brett filleted about 40 blue and spade fish for us, packaged them in ziploc bags and put them in our cooler! I even got some recipes from the Captain and cooked both fish that evening and everyone loved it!!! Found out blue fish can be substituted in crabcakes and wow what a treat especially for someone who is allergic to shellfish!5 star awesome experience! (I would say to take Dramamine the night before and/or morning of to prevent that typical wooziness that can happen way out there!) Thanks Capt Chandler for an awesome experience, we will be back!
